For more than a century, Breck School has flourished by keeping its focus squarely on the future of our students. We’ve developed innovative programs, recruited highly gifted teachers and upheld our commitment to ethical and spiritual education. In those ways, we’ve very much been a school of the future. But our Upper School, the oldest part of our campus (built primarily in 1956), is outdated and poorly configured. The time has come for us to transform the Upper School into a modern space that embodies and enhances the unique educational experience that is Breck. 

We're on schedule and on budget. We'll be ready to open the new Upper School in fall 2013.

Visible evidence of the project will begin in June 2012, with demolition of the current Upper School taking place during the summer of 2012. The new classrooms will be built during the 2012-13 school year. The current science classrooms will remain intact and used during the 2012-13 school year. They will be reconfigured into humanities classrooms during the summer of 2013. Our facility will be complete in time for the start of school in 2013-14.

Broadly speaking, we will have an amazing facility unlike any in the Twin Cities. There will be clustered academic departments so that students and faculty in every discipline can share resources and work together. We will have state-of-the-art spaces for science, math and technology. We will have light-filled open spaces with room for group projects and individual work. We will have space to support co-curricular activities. And we will have a brand-new Center for Servant Leadership — which you’ll be hearing more about — and is a unique and exciting blend of our current service and multicultural efforts.

We announced a master site plan to the community in the inaugural issue of the Today at Breck magazine in late spring 2011. As work continued on what we identified as the first phase of that long-term plan, our thinking evolved. Over the course of working with our faculty, architects and builders in the fall of 2012, we began to broaden our perspective about what could actually be done and realized that we had an opportunity to transform the entire Upper School in this process.

We will continue to offer our full range of PE classes and athletics, although there will obviously be challenges in scheduling. It’s important to remember that we’ve only had a Fieldhouse since 2000, so we’ll be reverting back to the way we did things before then for the time being.

Yes. The kindergarten classrooms on either side of the Chapel link will be relocated upstairs into what is currently Mr. Eustis’ English classroom and Ms. Merrill’s history classroom.
